Positive material identification, XRF & OES limits, programme extent, traceability, nonconformance & the RBI interface
What you'll learn
⚡ Design a material verification programme and defend its extent - risk-based selection, sampling and documentation
⚡ Apply XRF correctly and know its limits, particularly carbon detection and L-grade discrimination
⚡ Apply optical emission spectroscopy where carbon content and P-number discrimination matter
⚡ Manage a nonconformance - immediate actions, bounding the problem, replace versus fitness-for-service, and root cause
⚡ Verify materials at the right point in the supply chain, from mill certification through to installed position
⚡ Calibrate and verify instruments against certified reference materials, and manage measurement uncertainty
⚡ Establish marking, tagging and heat number traceability that survives fabrication and storage
⚡ Integrate verified material data into damage mechanism reviews and RBI likelihood assessment
⚡ Cover the components most often missed - bolting, gaskets, small bore, valve internals and weld consumables
⚡ Build, audit and demonstrate the effectiveness of the programme to regulators and insurers
Requirements
❗ No prior materials or instrumentation background is required - everything is built from first principles for engineers
❗ Any engineering, inspection, QA or technical background is enough to follow the course
❗ Helpful but not essential: familiarity with material grades or plant inspection
❗ No equipment or software needed - you do not need access to an XRF or OES instrument to follow the course
❗ Useful alongside the course but not required: a copy of API 578
Description
This course contains the use of artificial intelligence.
A carbon steel elbow and a low-alloy elbow look identical. One of them, installed in high-temperature hydrogen service, will fail.
Material mix-ups are among the most consequential and least visible errors in plant engineering. They pass every visual inspection, survive commissioning, and reveal themselves years later as accelerated corrosion, cracking, or a rupture that nobody predicted because the corrosion model assumed the material on the drawing.
API 578 is the recommended practice for preventing that, and this course teaches it as a working programme rather than a document.
WHY THIS MATTERS MORE THAN IT LOOKS
The failures are documented and expensive: carbon steel substituted for low alloy in hydrogen service, the wrong stainless grade in chloride service, incorrect bolting in cryogenic duty. The common thread in every case is not bad luck - it is a verification programme that either did not exist or did not reach far enough.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover the case for material verification, PMI technology and its limits, programme design and extent, execution and nonconformance management, and integration with the wider integrity programme.
You will learn how XRF actually works and - critically - what it cannot detect, which is why carbon content and L-grade discrimination remain a problem. Then optical emission spectroscopy, where carbon detection becomes possible and why that changes what you can certify. Plus the supporting methods, calibration against certified reference materials, measurement uncertainty, and the radiation safety obligations that come with handheld XRF.
THE DECISION EVERYONE STRUGGLES WITH
How much do you verify? A full section covers risk-based selection of extent - consequence-driven prioritisation, percentage versus one hundred percent verification, statistical sampling and its assumptions, and how to document the decision so it survives an audit. Plus where in the supply chain to verify, and why testing close to installation catches what mill certification does not.
EXECUTION, RECORDS AND WHAT HAPPENS WHEN YOU FIND ONE
Personnel qualification, marking and tagging conventions, heat number traceability, and record management that makes the data usable later. Then the part most programmes handle badly: what to do on discovering a wrong material - immediate actions, bounding the extent of the problem, replace versus fitness-for-service assessment, root cause investigation of the supply chain failure, and management of change.
THE PART NOBODY COVERS
Bolting. Gaskets. Small-bore fittings. Instrument connections. Valve internals. Weld consumables. The components most often omitted from a verification programme and most disproportionate in consequence when they are wrong.
WHO THIS IS FOR
Inspection and integrity engineers responsible for material verification programmes. QA/QC engineers and PMI technicians. Materials and corrosion engineers whose damage predictions depend on knowing what the material actually is. Procurement and supply chain staff managing alloy risk. Project and construction engineers running verification on new build. And engineers preparing for API certification exams where API 578 is a named source document.
WHAT YOU GET
Structured on-demand video across 20 focused lessons and five sections, section quizzes and a final exam, lifetime access on mobile and TV, a certificate of completion, and Udemy's 30-day money-back guarantee.
No prior materials or instrumentation background is required - everything is built from first principles for engineers. No equipment needed to follow the course.
Enrol now and stop assuming the material is what the drawing says.
