Description
Flanged joints are the most common source of loss of containment on process plant. Not vessels, not welds - joints. And the great majority of them leak not because the design was wrong but because the assembly was.
A joint can be correctly rated, correctly gasketed, hydrotested successfully and still leak in service, because achieved bolt load is dominated by friction and scatter, because the flanges were pulled together with the bolts, or because nobody checked the seating faces. This is a discipline with real theory behind it that is almost always treated as a fitter's task.
This course treats it as engineering.
WHAT YOU WILL MASTER
Five sections cover flange fundamentals and rating, gaskets and sealing mechanics, bolting and tightening, assembly practice and quality, and special service through to troubleshooting.
You will learn flange types and facings and how to read the ASME B16.5 pressure-temperature rating tables correctly for the material group and design conditions. You will select gaskets - spiral wound, kammprofile, sheet, ring type - against temperature, pressure, media and facing, and understand gasket stress, relaxation and why leakage is a continuum rather than a threshold.
THE PART THAT ACTUALLY PREVENTS LEAKS
A full section covers ASME PCC-1: the assembly procedure, the cross-pattern and legacy tightening sequences, the four-pass approach and final circular pass, target torque determination, and the Appendix A qualification of assembly personnel. Alongside it, the relationship between torque and achieved bolt load, why friction dominates, and where hydraulic tensioning and bolt elongation measurement earn their cost.
