Requirements
❗ No prior knowledge of China, international relations or mapping is required. This course is designed for beginners and anyone curious about China's changing role in the world. Students only need an internet connection and an interest in learning through maps, data and real-world examples.
Description
China's growing global presence is transforming international politics, economics and society-but how can we understand its scale, reach and consequences?
This introductory course provides an accessible, evidence-based guide to Mapping Global China. It examines how Chinese companies, financial institutions, infrastructure projects, technologies, cultural initiatives and security relationships operate across different regions of the world.
Rather than presenting China's global rise as either entirely beneficial or inherently threatening, the course gives you the concepts and tools needed to evaluate competing claims critically. Through maps, data and real-world examples, you will explore the Belt and Road Initiative, Chinese overseas investment and lending, global infrastructure and ports, trade and supply chains, soft power, technology, environmental impacts and China's evolving approach to international security.
You will also learn why China generally avoids traditional military alliances, how it instead builds partnerships through economic and political ties, and why some overseas ports raise questions about potential dual civilian and military use.
Throughout the course, you will discover how maps can reveal connections, patterns and inequalities that are difficult to identify through text alone. You will also learn to question what maps and datasets leave out, distinguish evidence from speculation, and compare how China's presence is experienced in different local contexts.
This course is designed for students, professionals, journalists, policymakers and anyone curious about China and contemporary international affairs. No previous knowledge of China or international relations is required.
By the end of the course, you will be able to interpret China's global presence with greater clarity, evaluate common narratives critically and use geographic evidence to develop your own informed analysis.
Who this course is for
