The Cone Penetration Testing (CPT) is a powerful, in-situ geotechnical method used to determine the subsurface stratigraphy and estimate soil engineering properties. Interpretation of CPT data relies primarily on two direct measurements recorded continuously as a cylindrical instrumented probe is pushed into the ground:Tip Resistance ($q_c$) andSleeve Friction ($f_s$).
Geotechnical engineers analyze these measurements by plotting them against depth to identify distinct soil layers and behavior types
✨Tip Resistance : This measures the force required to push the cone tip through the soil. High tip resistance generally indicates dense, coarse-grained soils like sands and gravels, or very stiff overconsolidated clays. Low tip resistance points toward soft, fine-grained soils like clays and silts.
✨Friction Ratio : To accurately differentiate soil types, engineers calculate the Friction Ratio, which is the ratio of sleeve friction to tip resistance, expressed as a percentage
Soil Behavior Type (SBT)
Rather than identifying exact grain-size distribution, modern CPT interpretation uses these metrics to classify soil into aSoil Behavior Type (SBT). By mapping q_c and R_f onto standard empirical charts (such as Robertson's charts), software can automatically generate a continuous, highly detailed soil profile.
Ultimately, integrating this automated data with physical soil logs from selective drilling ensures that the digital interpretation aligns perfectly with real-world site conditions, providing a robust foundation for engineering design.
