Description Rootwork Along the Bayou introduces students to the use of native Louisiana plants in Cajun Gris-Gris and local spiritual practice. In this course, students will learn how plants such as Red Bay, Mamou, Manglier, Elderberry, Sassafras, Wormseed, and Goat Weed have been understood through their natural qualities, traditional uses, and spiritual meanings. The course explains how Cajun plant work is different from simply treating herbs as magical ingredients. In Cajun Gris-Gris, the plant helps show the spiritual world what kind of help is being asked for, while the power of the work comes from God, through an intercessor, through the worker, and into the ritual action.
Students will explore how plants are used for protection, uncrossing, justice, courage, boundary-setting, banishment, restraint, and spiritual warning. They will also learn how the method of use changes the meaning of the work, including washing, carrying, tying, burying, placing at doors or windows, praying over plants, and using them in gris-gris bags or jars. Safety, respect for the land, and proper plant identification are emphasized throughout the course. By the end, students will have a stronger understanding of how Louisiana's landscape, folk medicine, Catholic prayer, and spiritual tradition come together in the living practice of Cajun Gris-Gris.
