Positioning Your Career Beyond Dashboards in the Age of AI
What you'll learn

✓ Know what BI roles actually look like at small, mid-sized, and large companies, and choose the right environment for your goals.
✓ Navigate today's competitive BI job market with practical guidance on resumes, portfolios, applications, interviews, and offers.
✓ Plan your first 90 days on a new BI team using a clear 30-60-90 framework that helps you build credibility quickly without burning out.
✓ Build strong working relationships with the business partners (Finance, Marketing, Sales, Operations, HR, and others) who consume your work.
✓ Run business intelligence projects through every phase of the lifecycle, from initiation through long-term maintenance.
✓ Master the art of requirements gathering, including stakeholder interviewing, validation, documentation, and avoiding the most common requirements traps.
✓ Develop the business acumen (business models, financial literacy, strategic thinking, and industry knowledge) that separates valuable analysts from superb ones.
✓ Navigate the political realities of working with data inside an organization, including how to build political capital and protect your work.
✓ Tell stories with data that move decision-makers to action, using core principles tailored specifically to BI tools (not just slide decks).
✓ Recognize, prevent, and recover from burnout, and protect your long-term enjoyment of a BI career.
✓ Build sustainable continuous learning habits that keep your skills relevant in an industry being reshaped by AI.
✓ Cultivate a strong personal and professional brand inside and outside your company.
✓ Understand the wide variety of career paths available to BI professionals, from individual contributor tracks to management to adjacent fields.
✓ Position yourself for promotions, lateral moves, and the kind of long-term career growth that compounds over decades.
Requirements
● No technical prerequisites. You do not need to know Power BI, Tableau, SQL, DAX, or Python to take this class, although you should be focused on developing those skills through others means.
● A basic familiarity with what business intelligence is and what data professionals do is helpful but not required.
● An open mind, a willingness to think honestly about your own career, and a sense of humor.
Description
Most Business Intelligence courses set out to teach you Power BI, SQL, or Python, and there are plenty of great ones out there, including some I've made myself. But after more than a decade in the industry, I've watched too many talented BI professionals stall out for reasons that have nothing to do with their technical skills. They could write beautiful DAX. Their dashboards could be stunning works of art. But somewhere along the way, the work stopped landing - projects went sideways, stakeholders disengaged, and powerful reports were quietly swept under the rug.
Making It in Business Intelligence is the course I wish someone had handed me when I started out. It's not about how to use a specific tool. It's about everything that happens around the tool: How to land a BI role in a brutally competitive job market, how to navigate the politics and culture of the company you join, how to gather requirements from stakeholders who don't always know what they need, how to tell stories with data that actually drive decisions, and how to manage your career, your reputation, and your sanity over the long haul. This course tackles the human, business, and strategic side of BI work head-on, with honest stories from a BI Director who's still very much figuring some of this stuff out himself and is just as curious to see how AI transforms the industry in the years ahead as everyone else.
Whether you're just considering a career in business intelligence, actively job-hunting, or in your first couple of years on the job, this class is designed to give you the perspective and practical guidance that will set you apart. We'll talk about how artificial intelligence tools are changing the BI landscape today, working at companies of different sizes, building business acumen, navigating data politics, recovering from burnout, continuous learning in an AI-disrupted world, and where a BI career can take you in the uncertain years ahead. There are no Power BI projects, no DAX, and no SQL in this course, just sixteen lessons of learnings that have shaped my career and the careers of the BI professionals I've worked with. If you're ready to think about your BI career as more than just a tool stack, you're in the right place.
Who this course is for
■ Aspiring Business Intelligence professionals trying to break into the industry and unsure where to start beyond the technical skills.
■ Recent graduates and career-changers who have invested in technical training but feel under-prepared for the human side of BI work.
■ New BI Analysts, BI Engineers, BI Developers, Data Analysts, and Power BI Developers in their first one to three years on the job looking to insulate themselves against AI.
■ Mid-career analytics professionals who want to evolve from order-takers into strategic partners and trusted advisors.
■ Anyone curious about whether a BI career is right for them - and what life on the other side of the offer letter actually looks like.
